Stage 3

July 10th, 2026

A Day for the Breakaway

Cycling is deeply rooted in East Tyrol – from the Giro d’Italia to the Tour of the Alps, Felix Gall and the Tour of Austria.

The key questions of the day: How has the peloton recovered from the first two stages? Which riders have already shown their ambitions for the general classification? And will a breakaway succeed?

After the start in picturesque Lienz, the peloton completes two laps in the valley, including a sprint near the new train station. The decisive move will likely form on the long climb toward the Felbertauern Tunnel.

From Mittersill via Wagrain and Bischofshofen, it is still a long way to the finish in St. Johann/Alpendorf, known for its spectacular uphill finish. Like the Mur de Huy in Belgium, the Tour of Austria has its own iconic ramp here.

Puncheurs with perfect timing will be key – ensuring excitement right to the finish.

32-TIME HOST OF TOUR OF AUSTRIA

“The Tour of Austria has a long-standing tradition in East Tyrol. As early as the 1950s, there were legendary stage finishes here, followed by starts heading over the Großglockner. Over the decades, this has led to many unforgettable and friendly encounters with organizers and cyclists. We are delighted that Lienz will host a stage for the 32nd time in this anniversary year. This places us fifth in the all-time ranking of host locations. With the stage over the Felbertauern, we can look forward to an exciting day in international cycling,” says cycling enthusiast and Chairman of the East Tyrol Tourism Board, Franz Theurl, who wishes the Tour of Austria a successful and accident-free race and looks forward to July 10 with great anticipation.
